Graham's Vintage Port 2007
Last week, we enjoyed a visit from Dominic Symington, whose family owns five port houses and numerous vineyards throughout Portugal's Douro Valley. The Symington family have been a major influence in port production for over 350 years.
I have to admit here that ports aren't exactly part of my regular consumption. To be honest, they don't often come to mind, except for special occasions of some sort. Yet after having an opportunity to taste five 2007's with Dominic, I've had port on the brain for a week and a half!
Each house's style is distinctly different, a fact made more apparent tasting them side by side. Some were rich, opulent and floral; others were drier, more restrained, showing dark fruits and baking spices. All were surprisingly approachable now, while still possessing the promise of long-term cellarability. With many wines today being built for more immediate consumption, it's gratifying to think that an investment made today could still be paying off in 20 years time, or perhaps more. Further, unlike most other wines, vintage ports aren't made every single year, but only those years in which each port house "declares a vintage", meaning that they feel their wine of that year is of particularly fine quality. For these reasons and more, vintage ports are the perfect way to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries and other noteworthy events.
While some 50 port houses declared in 2007, of the few we tasted the ones listed below were clearly the finest. All prices are net.
